Every vehicle we cover gets checked against real NHTSA recall filings, cross-referenced by exact model year and trim — because a recall that applies to a 2022 engine doesn’t necessarily apply to the 2025 version of the same nameplate, and that distinction matters when you’re spending real money. We hold every car to the same standard regardless of reputation, and we say so plainly when a car doesn’t clear the bar, even if the badge on the back suggests it should.
Why the Stoplight System Means Something
Our signature stoplight rating system (🟢🟡🔴) reflects two things: whether a vehicle carries any severe recalls — fire risk, drivetrain failure, brake failure, or steering/suspension detachment — and whether its engine or transmission has a documented pattern of failure, whether or not that pattern has ever risen to a formal recall. A clean paperwork record isn’t the same as a clean mechanical one, and we won’t pretend otherwise.
