Newer does not always mean problem-free. While some brands fixed their headline mechanical flaws, complex new auxiliary systems — electronic multi-way thermostat valves, high-pressure fuel components, and software-dependent modules — have created fresh failure vectors.

Deep Dive: Why the Ratings Landed Where They Did

🟢 Toyota RAV4

The 2.5L Dynamic Force engine (A25A) paired with either the 8-speed automatic or the hybrid eCVT remains one of the most proven powertrains in the segment. Toyota’s hybrid system continues to demonstrate excellent long-term durability when the battery cooling paths are kept clean.

Watchpoints: Some hybrid models experienced high-voltage cable wear (“Cablegate”) in earlier years of this generation. The electronic coolant bypass valve can also stick. Neither issue is widespread enough to drop the rating, but both should be checked on pre-purchase inspections.

🟢 Mazda CX-5 / CX-50

Mazda’s naturally aspirated 2.5L SkyActiv-G remains one of the cleanest, simplest, and most durable engines in the class. The conventional 6-speed automatic is also well-regarded for longevity.

Watchpoint: The turbocharged 2.5T versions have shown higher rates of valve-seal oil consumption in some examples. Non-turbo models are the safer long-term bet for high-mileage buyers.

🟢 Hybrid / 🟡 1.5T — Honda CR-V

The split rating is deliberate. Honda’s 2.0L hybrid system has proven significantly more robust than the earlier 1.5T + CVT combination. The hybrid eCVT avoids many of the heat and durability concerns that followed the turbo models.

1.5T Watchpoints: High-pressure fuel pump seepage and occasional steering gearbox “sticky” feel continue to appear in owner reports. These are manageable but keep the turbo version in Yellow territory for long-term confidence.

🟡 Kia Sportage / Hyundai Tucson

The Upgrade: The 2.5L Smartstream engine (MPI + GDI dual injection) paired with a conventional 8-speed automatic is a major step forward from the old Theta II era. Core mechanical durability is now much stronger.

Why It Stays Yellow: Electronic thermal management modules (ITMS) can fail, and several display/cluster software recalls have affected these models. The engine and transmission are solid; the supporting electronics and thermal systems still need more time to prove themselves at high mileage.

🟡 Subaru Forester

The FB25 boxer is generally durable when maintained, and the latest Lineartronic CVTs are improved over earlier versions. However, the electronic Thermo Control Valve (TCV) has become a recurring failure point, often triggering coolant-related warnings and limp modes.

Until the TCV issue is more thoroughly resolved across the fleet, the Forester remains a cautious Yellow.

🟡 Ford Escape / Bronco Sport

Both the 1.5L and 2.0L EcoBoost engines can be strong when healthy, but cracked fuel injectors and related fuel-system issues have appeared in this generation. The 8F35 8-speed has also produced torque-converter shudder in some examples.

These are not universal failures, but they are frequent enough to keep the rating out of Green territory for high-mileage buyers.

🟡 Chevy Equinox / GMC Terrain

The 1.5L turbo has improved, yet wastegate actuator problems and cold-weather PCV/icing issues continue to surface. Transmission choice also matters — CVT-equipped versions carry more long-term question marks than the conventional 8-speed.

For maximum long-term predictability, the Toyota RAV4 (especially hybrid) and Mazda CX-5 (non-turbo) remain the safest mechanical bets. The Honda CR-V Hybrid is also excellent. Kia and Hyundai have fixed their old engine nightmares and now offer strong value, but their newer electronic and thermal systems keep them in Yellow. Ford, GM, and Subaru each carry specific, well-documented watchpoints that deserve a careful pre-purchase inspection.
